Orders secured for 1,000 buses as ADL steps up the technology race – 6th November 2012
The British bus building industry was given a massive boost today when Scottish manufacturer Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) announced that it has won orders for almost 1,000 vehicles, worth £220 million, all of which will be delivered in the next 18 months. ADL’s success is fuelled by two revolutionary new buses. The first is a ground-breaking, three-axle double deck for export markets that is lighter, more fuel efficient, easier to maintain – and can carry 135 passengers. It is known as the new generation Enviro500 and its launch is arguably the most successful of all-time, securing orders for over 530 from Hong Kong’s leading bus operators. Alongside this, in the UK market, ADL is set to introduce its next generation hybrid-electric bus.
The company already has 600 hybrids operating in the UK, in many cases achieving fuel and CO2 reductions of 60% compared to previous diesel equivalents. Their latest technology will introduce stop-start hybrids, enabling zero emissions as vehicles pull away from bus stops. ADL expects this to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by another 8-10%.
And market confidence in the new technology is so high that ADL has already received advance orders for 150 vehicles. They will be delivered between now and the summer of 2013, going into operation with fleets such as National Express, Stagecoach, FirstGroup, Go-Ahead, London United and Metroline (London).
In addition, ADL’s market-leading Enviro200, a highly manoeuvrable, small, fuel efficient midi bus, continues to be a world best-seller in this sector and orders for 175 have been won. These are for both home and export markets and will be delivered in the next six months.

He added: “As a business, our total focus is on developing and bringing to market a range of products that raise the bar on fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, reliability, maintainability and best-in-class whole life costs. Our new Enviro500 is a classic example of this, providing a tailor-made solution for customers such as KMB, Citybus and MTRC in Hong Kong. I am confident there will be further opportunities for this vehicle in the Asia Pacific region.
“In the meantime, we are set to step up a gear with our hybrid technology. In recent years we have established ourselves as the world’s leading supplier of double deck hybrids and we intent to maintain that position, while also expanding our new stop-start technology into full-size single decks for home and overseas markets.”
Speaking at the Euro Bus Expo 2012 in Birmingham, Colin Robertson said that in parallel with these new developments he was delighted to see the continued success of ADL’s Enviro200 midi range, which now has a 56% share of the UK market.
He commented: “We will build another 175 before the year end, taking Enviro200 sales to well beyond 600 this year – and what is particularly pleasing is that one-in-three of these will be for small and medium-sized operators, virtually all of whom are coming back for repeat business. That’s good news and dispels the myth that it’s impossible to work with independents and the large multi-nationals. Our message is clear: Large or small, we want your business.”
Robertson also confirmed that ADL intends to further internationalise its midi bus product range. A joint venture with New Flyer Industries, North America’s biggest bus and coach manufacturer, is forging ahead and a customised product for the USA and Canada will be introduced to operators in 2013.
He said: “We believe there is potential for a fuel-efficient, economic midi bus and to create a whole new bus sector in North America that could have the potential for 1,000 vehicles a year. We are now driving that plan forward in partnership with New Flyer.
